  • Tom Chantry, the son of Borden Chantry, starts out with the reputation of a coward with a distaste for guns - a character vastly different from the sort usually presented by L'Amour. L'Amour took a strong stance on guns in this book, with the wild west eroding Tom's idealism in an effort to show why guns are sometimes necessary. This story will appeal to advocates for the Second Amendment, serving as a clear example of how criminals don't bother to pay attention to laws.

The story felt splotchy, as though the seams showed in between the scenes. I know L'Amour didn't enjoy editing but this book, like many of L'Amour's books, contains typos and printing errors that I blame on the publishers. It's a missing (conjunctive) word or the wrong tense of a word in a passage not attempting a vernacular dialect; small things that should've been weeded out long ago because these books have been through multiple printings. The errors don't inhibit understanding of the passage but they are a minor annoyance that momentarily distracts me from the story.

My favorite part of this book is the ending because it exemplifies hubris. I'm not giving away more spoiler than that; I just want to note that the ending of this book has been my favorite from any of the books in either the Sacketts or Talon and Chantry series.
  • This is not one of Louis L'Amour's better novels. The opening premise is that no one will sell cattle to Tom Chantry--a cattle buyer from the East--because he backed down from a gunfight with a drunk in a bar. This eventually leads Tom to make an arrangement with a less than trustworthy rancher. Tom joins the rancher for the cattle drive to the rail head with the agreement that, if Tom fails to make it all the way, the rancher gets to keep the cattle and the payment. Both the opening premise and the arrangement that it spawned were, for me, a stretch of credibility. The inclusion of Indians and outlaws complicate the plot and sometimes make it difficult to follow.
  • Like anything L'Amour wrote its great. I havent found a dud yet and ive read a ton of his stuff. Well let me say that applies for the cowboy stuff. I havent cared for the adventure stuff as well, good but somehos missing something. But westerns he is the best and ive read other writers.
  • I thought of all the things I learned from my dad and grandad, as Tom remembered his fathers words. I wonder now how many times my son does the same. Good book.
  • This is an interesting story of how a man needs to adapt to the environment in which they find themself. Behavior that is a norm in one society may not translate well in another - this was very true in the West post Civil War. Mores and behaviors that were "civilized" in the east would mark you and make you very vulnerable to scorn and even death in the west. This is a great coming of age story which will give you glimps into the cattle and railroad industries!
  • This book is like all of Louis Lamour's westerns. Five star and difficult to put down. Looking for another to read.
  • Another very good book and lots of good characters. The story will hold your interest and keep you wondering what is going to happen next.
  • Tom Chantry, son of the famous Borden comes to the west naive about guns and killing.
He acquires a reputation of being a coward but over the course of the novel he demonstrates
he is anything but even in the face of the most fearless and brutal adversaries. Great easy reading.
    Another page turner.
