Revolt in 2100 Robert A Heinlein Books Reviews
- If you've seen references to "Coventry" or "The Covenant" in other Heinlein Novels, then "Revolt in 2100" will fill in about the totalitarian theocracy led by Nehemiah Scudder and the "Second Revolution." This is the story of the resistance that toppled the cruel regime started by a televangelist. The book is actually fantastic in audiobook form; I both read and listened and like other of Heinlein's books, some of the them are really better in audio form; this is one of them.
There is plenty of action, drama, scenes of capture and torture (but not so graphic...just psychologically scary) and a military operation, all subjects in Heinlein's wheelhouse; Heinlein went to Annapolis and only cut short a military career due to bad health.
Coventry is the story of the preserve for rugged individualists, combative people and criminals who do not follow "The Covenant", a set of rules for peace and tranquility. A few surprises along the way, but not my favorite book over all. Heinlein's libertarian leanings show well here what makes a good society? Can it be free of friction? When is it better to be a sheep or a goat?
Misfit is the story of Andy Libby who comes back as Lazarus Long's math whiz pal and partner in galactic exploration. Here he is as a raw youth, so that's his back story. Fills in a lot of details.
Summary If you are a big Heinlein fan (and I am one) then these short novellas and stories are background material for the future history timeline. A timeline is included in the forward. Try listening in Audible I've found several of these books are actually more fun to hear than to read (Farmer in the Sky is also wonderful in Audible.) - It's hard for me to rate this book. As far as I know, I've read everything Heinlein has written. I consider him the greatest science fiction writer ever. So reviewing his work needs to compare it to the rest of his work. That said, this is not his best, but one needs to read it to better understand the rest of his "future history". Also, much of what I love about Heinlein is his ideas. And "Coventry", the second novella in the book, is an interesting concept of a penal colony.
If you can, get a copy of "The Past through Tomorrow", which seems to be out of print. It contains Revolt in 2100 along with "Methusulah's Children", and numerous short stories all in the same timeline. (Heinlein fans know his books and stories are written in one of several timelines. Each timeline' stories share the same historical background.) - This book is one of Heinlein's Past through Tomorrow books. It's about the group of people who take our country back from a group of religious zealots. Sound familiar. I read this book eons ago but found myself re-reading it because of today's politics. At the time I first read the book, I thought, surely this could never happen in the United States. Now I believe it could and maybe is.
- Great anthology from the master. Always liked this introduction to the wonderful character of "Slipstick" Libby. And like Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale", Heinlein's novella "Revolt in 2100" scares the heck out of me, due to it's all-too-possible scenario.

- "Revolt in 2100" features two stories, which are mini-novels "If This Goes On..." and "Coventry." The first, "If This Goes On" is far and away the better of the two. It deals with an America circa 2100 in which the original American republic has been overthrown and a religious dictatorship exists as the Government of the United States. The young protagonist is a West Point graduate and Army officer, chosen for his piety and religious orthodoxy to be a member of the personal guard detail of the Prophet, who is the actual Dictator of the United States. Close contact with the Prophet and the priesthood quickly disenchants him, and therein lies a pretty good yarn of rebellion. More would be telling, but even today this yarn retains its ability to capture and hold the reader's interest.
"Coventry" is a little more problematic. It is set several generations after the revolt against the Prophet. I did not care for it, but many do, so give it a try and make your own judgment. Most Heinlein fans will enjoy this book, and the price is certainly right. RJB. - I have read many sci-fi books, and so called anthologies. Heinlein"s future history has the best continuity of all. And the books are a great read individually.
- Heinlein invites us to think again. Interesting references to Masonic lodge as an underground force. Are they still up to it?
